Several years ago, I heard a similar idea from Jon Roland (of constitution.org).The conversation was in a different context (National ID cards, and the tendency of governments to use drivers license as proof of ID).He preferred the idea of having our network of Notaries put digital signatures on certificates.  It would work like the PGP Web of Trust, your cryptoID would be as trusted as the network of notaries you used for signatures.Use a set of dodgy notaries (bad rep, license revoked, etc...) and your ID became untrusted.
